dead flowers

NME cover boys, 1989

The Stone Roses debut album is definitely on my list of top 5 desert island discs - and could very well be numero uno, depending on the day/mood. I'm grateful that I got to see them live at least once in my life, though a reunion tour seems very unlikely (see John Squire's 2009 artpiece above).
Like Johnny Marr, post-Smiths, The Roses' former members post-band work is meh (hello, Seahorses) considering the level of grandeur they've shown us they're capable of achieving. Long live The Roses!

Vivienne Westwood for Melissa boots
Annabella Lwin 1982
I covet these rainboots by Vivienne Westwood in collaboration with Melissa shoes. Bow Wow Wow was one of my favorite bands growing up. I loved all the pirate gear Vivienne used to dress the singer Annabella in. I remember reading that she once gave her a gold tooth by using the gold foil from her Benson & Hedges cigarette packet. Ooo, go wild in the country!

Warhol silkscreen, 1980

in the flesh
The cost of having a silkscreened portrait by Andy Warhol was $25,000, plus $15,000 for an additional one. Now that's something worth maxing out your credit cards on.

One gem in particular is featured in the video below. I originally wanted to post Grey Cell Green by Ned's Atomic Dustbin (also in the box set), but found no existing video.

tomato, tomato...
I went record shopping last weekend and found Talk Show by the Go-Go's. I used to have this on cassette and have always loved the cover art. As I slid the liner notes out, a handful of magazine clippings fell out, as well as a concert ticket. I remember begging my mom to let me go to this show at the Greek Theatre back in 1984. She said no.

Next I found Different Light by The Bangles. I checked inside the record and saw that there were magazine clippings and concert tickets too. Prince showed up at this concert at the Warfield in 1986 and joined the girls onstage for Manic Monday. This album also has a sweet rendition of September Gurls. After Alex Chilton recently passed away, I read the royalties he got from having that song on The Bangles album bought him a house and allowed him to quit his job as a dishwasher in New Orleans.

Ah, remember the days when Muni Fast Passes were a mere $11? Well, neither do I - but they sure were cuter then. I have no idea why I collect these.

mini mini

Vintage B-52's pin and mini Mini

I purchased the B-52's pin last Sunday at the Alemany flea market. I remember going to the Record Factory on Polk Street in the early 80s with my mother and staring at this record cover thinking, who are these people?

The mini-Mini was purchased at the Paul Smith store on Geary Street last year. I was next door at Anthony's waiting for my boots to be resoled and decided to pop into the newly opened boutique. Paul Smith was in town for the opening and just so happened to be standing there. A salesperson said that I should seize the opportunity and get him to sign something. I noticed they were selling miniature models of the Paul Smith edition Mini Morris cars and decided that it would be a cool memento for my son Miles to have.
