keep calm and carry on

Wino(na) Forever

I know it's been a minute.
I had no idea Winona was in the Black Swan (portraying an aging prima ballerina...OMG).
It's better to burn out than fade away, baby.

space age love song

Nebula
Another gorgeous nebula
Transmission, Joy Division single 1979
Galaxy scarf, Risto Bimbiloski
Risto Bimbiloski nebula mania
Who doesn't love nebula pants? As long as they're not crab nebulae, that is. Weh-weh.
OK, maybe the pants - especially the shorts - are a bit much...but I admit, I covet that scarf.
I wouldn't kick that Joy Division 7" out of bed, either. (Insert joke here)

cruel summer

Siobhan Fahey was my favorite member of Bananarama. She left the group in the 1980s when she married Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and formed Shakespears Sister. Here she is at 51 - and she's still got it.

some girls

Marianne Faithfull 1967
Anita Pallenberg 1968
Bianca Jagger 1972 (by Richard Avedon)
Jerry Hall 1976 (with ex, Bryan Ferry in background)
Patti Hansen 1978
Some girls wanted to grow up to be to be Florence Nightingale. I wanted to be Anita Pallenberg (or any of the Rolling Stones' chicks). As a kid, I used to look at photos of Bianca Jagger in my mother's Vogue and thought it was genius that I couldn't tell her and Mick apart.

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto. More importantly, does anyone actually remember Sigue Sigue Sputnik?

classic rock

Front cover: Marie Antoinette, Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, 1783
Back Cover: Anne Boleyn, Anonymous, 16th century
A Basket of Roses, Henri Fantin-Latour, 1890
Flaming June, Lord Frederic Leighton, 1895
Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order (1983) and Waltz Darling by the late Malcolm McLaren (1989) are favorite albums of mine, both visually and musically. The jury's still out on Nobody's Daughter by Hole (2010), but the cover art is genius. The inlay artwork contains the image of The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche (1834). It's no accident that they're all tragic queens - Courtney being the drama queen bee of them all.

singles mixer

"Anyone who understands the obsessive attention to detail, the time it took to collate, select and edit the content of a perfectly executed mix tape, or just someone who appreciated the rhythms and nuances of such extraordinary artifacts will treasure this collection of stories comfortable and secure in the knowledge that such exquisite efforts were not made in vain and indeed there was a time when a humble cassette tape was perhaps the greatest gift of all." ~Shirley Manson
